I have to say, I was delighted when Colossus Bets got back in touch with me a few days ago and asked me to produce another prediction blog for their website – not least because it meant I had a reason to get off my arse and start writing about football again.

If you missed my first attempt at predicting six correct scores for the £10m prize pot then you may not know that I didn’t perform too badly. In fact, the only scoreline that I failed to get either spot on or close to was Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Swansea (I had it down as a 1-1 draw).

But enough of last time.

This weekend throws up a fresh opportunity to claim the £10m jackpot and I’m in confident mood – reinvigorated, you could say. Without further ado, here are my selections.

Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

Not very good.

Maybe I’m just strange but I hate predicting the fortunes of my own team. Unfortunately, The Colossus has once more presented me with the dilemma of picking out a result for Brendan Rodgers’ Reds. Having said that (here comes the bit I’ll regret writing), Liverpool always seem to do pretty well at St James Park – none more so than their thumping 6-0 win last season – and I can see another comfortable away win this time around.

Although, with the hapless Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa set to miss out, there may be a few less gaping holes to exploit in the Geordie defence.

Manchester United 1-0 Southampton

While we’ve all enjoyed a good laugh at Manchester United’s misfortunes this season (well, I have, anyway), I do expect them to get better. If Wayne Rooney can re-produce the form he showed for England in the week and in glimpses for United so far this campaign then boss David Moyes should have a fairly handy forward line at his disposal.

Southampton, on the other hand, have began the season promisingly and have conceded just two goals in seven matches. That said, I’m predicting a slender home win and perhaps a Rooney goal to boot.

West Ham 0-2 Manchester City

Did you know that Manchester City have failed to win a game away from home this season? Ok, maybe you did – but the point stands that Manuel Pellegrini’s outfit have struggled on their travels with two defeats and one draw.

“So how does that affect your prediction, Matt?” It doesn’t, reader – I’m plumping for an away win!

City have far too much quality to continue their barren away run and while West Ham shocked Spurs last time out, I foresee a first on-the-road success for Pellegrini.

Espanyol 0-2 Atletico Madrid

Great player. Just a little bit of a dick.

Admittedly, I haven’t seen Espanyol in action this season and it would be foolish of me to pretend that I had. However, I have watched a fair bit of Atletico Madrid over the last couple of years and I know that Diego Simeone has built a formidable side spearheaded by the uncompromising and in-form Diego Costa. Just like leaders Barcelona, Atletico have won eight from eight while Espanyol have lost their last three. All signs point towards another victory for Atletico.

Leeds 2-1 Birmingham

The Championship is always difficult to predict. As the saying goes – anyone can beat anyone. Both of these teams have endured disappointing starts to the campaign but with Birmingham truly incompetent away from St Andrews – suffering four straight defeats – I’m giving an edge to the home side here.

Aston Villa 0-3 Tottenham

Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa have the hallmarks of a team that could be better against the stronger sides in the division – with wins over Arsenal and Manchester City already in the bag alongside narrow defeats to Liverpool and Chelsea.

However, Tottenham had an impressive victory against Villa in the Capital One Cup (albeit with vastly changed teams) and I can see a similar outcome here. Villa are still likely to be without Christian Benteke and that can’t help but be a plus for the visitors.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Fulham

Crystal Palace look like a team who are really short on quality to me – especially in the attacking areas of the pitch – although Jason Puncheon could prove a decent acquisition. Fulham are just one place above their London opposition but do provide a more potent threat in the final third with the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Bryan Ruiz and Adel Taarabt to call upon.

I suspect this could be an open encounter with plenty of chances – a score draw.

My Colossus Bet

Below are my selections for this weekend’s Colossus bet. Think you can do better? Go on then, have a go!
